Hey all,
Just to let you know and for a bit of good fun after the AGM, that this week Debating Soc will be inviting you all to a comedy fun-filled balloon debate!
Be there, at 8PM, THURSDAY FEBRUARY 15TH, PARKINSON BUILDING!!!
If you don’t know what that is, then we will explain it to you in detail when you arrive, but in brief, it basically goes like this - you can pick any character or person you want to be, and imagine that this person is in a hot air balloon with the characters of all the other participants. The balloon is deflating, and people need to be thrown out! You have to argue for why your character should stay. Last person standing is the winner! We will no doubt be off to the pub for copious amounts of alcohol afterward too;)
Our Annual General Meeting will also take place on Thurs, so if you want to be stand to be elected for committee next year, please be there, and ready to sell yourself to the masses! A description of procedure and committee roles will follow this message, but please do not forget to email unidebat@leeds.ac.uk before 4pm on Valentines Day to inform me if you wish to stand. Names not received before this deadline will be uneligible for election. you will also need to be around Leeds next week for handover meetings and paperwork.
May I take this chance to thank all existing Committee and members for a good year’s progress - we all have a lot to be proud of, and I wish the new committee, whoever they be, the very best of luck:)
See you all on Thurs,
Lisi
(not for long!) Debating Soc Pres;)
LUU DEBATING SOCIETY
2007 – 08: COMMITTEE ROLES
Members putting themselves forward for election should give a two minute speech in support of their candidacy and ability to fulfil the relevant role as outlined below. Note that in addition to their specific jobs, all committee members share a responsibility for helping with socials and general events.
President
Responsible for being the public face of the society, and usually the first point of contact for those wanting to find out more about it, the President sets short- and long-term goals for the society, and leads the committee in putting together a balanced programme of events. Key day-to-day tasks include co-ordinating and assigning tasks to committee members, keeping the website updated, and generally being available to solve all the unexpected problems that can’t be anticipated in a neat little profile J
Vice president
The Vice-President’s main role is a supportive one, and is fairly ‘without portfolio’: it’s basically about being available to take on the wide range of tasks that come up all the time but that don’t fall within anybody else’s remit and the President doesn’t have time for! A large part of it is about being flexible and available at short notice for last minute jobs. The Vice-President also organises the annual IntraVarsity internal competition.
Treasurer
Unsurprisingly, the Treasurer’s day-to-day job is all about looking after the society’s financial affairs: keeping the accounts, collecting membership fees, arranging payment for IV registration and so on. The bigger picture involves drawing up a budget, making funding applications to the Union, seeking sponsorship, and generally extorting money from any likely source.
General Secretary
The General Secretary is responsible for looking after all aspects of society admin, including making room bookings, maintaining the mailing list and member records, keeping Union bureaucrats happy with the right forms, and ensuring that the society’s events are well publicised.
IV convenor
Next year should see the return to the UK circuit of the Leeds InterVarsity, and the IV convenor will be the committee member broadly responsible for leading a team of members in co-ordinating all aspects of the organisation (planning, budgeting, sponsorship, publicity, room bookings, tabbing, socials, crash, etc etc etc…)
