Reading and Euros

Hi everyone,

For those of you who missed the last debate of the term much chocolate was consumed and Zaynab and Lis successfully opposed the proposal to legalise the sale of ecstacy in nightclubs.

I just thought I’d send out an email in case anyone was interested in going to the IV at Reading. It’s a new competition so if you’re a novice (you’ve never been to an IV before) it’s a great opportunity to get some experience. It’s on Saturday 28th April and if it’s your first IV, Debating Soc will pay your registration fees. Please contact Zaynab (z.alnasser@gmail.com) if you’re interested.

Also we’re finalising who wants to go to the European Championships at the moment so if you’re a team that’s interested let me know before the end of the holidays. It’s from the 5th-11th August and you have to be available for the warm-up competition in Nottingham 28th-29th July. It’s in Istanbul, Turkey. We have been sponsered by Walker Morris so we will try and subsidise you as much as possible.

I hope you’re having a great Easter.

Best wishes,
Felicity Dennistoun

FREE CHOCOLATE! - Thursday 15th March, 8pm Parkinson Steps

Hi everyone!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who supported last week’s joint event with Amnesty International. And special thanks to Idunn, Adam, Helen, Dave, Ian, Natasha and Zaynab for being such fabulous debaters.

This week’s motion is….

********************** This House Believes in Miracles! **************************

Same time, same place, Thursday 15th March, 8pm Parkinson Steps

To celebrate the end of term there will bonus points in the form of Mini Eggs for anyone that gets in a reference to the Easter Bunny. There is no limit to the number of eggs you can win. And of course we will be off to the Old Bar afterwards for drinks.

The debating society will be back next term on Thursday 19th April when Dummy sessions will resume. If any of you are interested in Euros, doing a Dummy session or have any queries about debating please drop me an email.

Have a fabulous Easter holiday. Hope to see you on Thursday. :-)

Amnesty International and the Debating Society sort out Immigration!

For the first time ever the Debating Society and Amnesty International are having a joint debate.
The motion is…

******This House Would Close Its Borders to Immigrants******

Thursday 8th March, 8pm Parkinson Steps. If you’re running late we’ll be in Room B08 under Parkinson Court where debates are usually held.

There will be a show debate and then Amnesty will give a short talk on the issues surrounding asylum and immigration and their stance on it. There will be an opportunity for you to grill the debaters and Amnesty and then we’ll all migrate over to the Old Bar for drinks.

This is the first big event of the new committee so we hope that as many of you as possible will come and support it. Please feel free to bring your friends, you don’t need to be a member of the debating society to attend. If you know anyone who is interested in debating but wants to see what it’s all about this is a brilliant opportunity as they will be able to watch a debate.

Thanks to everyone who came last week to debate
THW tell Roxanne to turn on her red light… (basically a debate about the legalisation of prostitiution)
And a special thank you to Adam and Helen for doing such a fantastic dummy session on how philosophical issues affect debating. If anyone wants anymore information on these or wants to do one themselves just let me know.

Anyway, have a good week and hopefully see you all on Thursday.
